As the time approaches to register your child for Grade 1, we understand how exciting—and sometimes overwhelming—this milestone can be. To help you navigate the admissions process smoothly, we've compiled everything you need to know about applying for Grade 1 in 2025.
Documents You'll Need
Before you begin the application process, it's important to gather and certify the necessary documents. While some of these documents won’t be required in the initial stage, having them ready will save you time later on:
Unabridged birth certificate (stamped)
Immunization card
Proof of address
Identity documents of both parents (stamped)
Three months' bank statements (stamped, may be required)
Small photo of your child (once accepted)
Copy of the last report card (June 2023 card and then December report)
To get ahead, consider dropping off hard copies of these documents early.
Important Dates and Online Application
The admissions process for Grade 1 opens on 11th July at 08:00 am and will remain open until 12th August. It’s advisable not to rush to the system as soon as it opens, as it might experience technical difficulties due to high traffic.
You can complete the application on a smartphone, tablet, or computer. Remember, all Grade 1–8 applications must be done online. After submitting your online application, additional forms from the school will need to be collected and submitted within 7 days. These documents can be collected from the school office once you receive your GDE (Gauteng Department of Education) waiting list number.
Applying to Dunvegan Primary School
If you are applying to Dunvegan Primary School, Mrs. Belinda Barber will be your contact. You can collect and submit all required documents to her. For other prospective primary schools, please contact them directly to handle your documents.
How to Register Online
When you log onto www.gdeadmissions.gov.za, you will need to register. Make sure you have the following information at hand:
Your ID and your child's ID
Sibling details if you are using the sibling option
Your home and work addresses (use the closest address to the school if mom and dad’s addresses differ)
Application Strategy
When completing your application, we recommend following this order to maximize your chances of securing a spot at your preferred school:
Home Address: Start by selecting your home address as your first option. The system will suggest the school closest to where you live. Apply to that school first. If you skip this step, you may lose out on the opportunity to choose from 5 schools later.
Home Address Again: The system will now show you the 5 closest schools to your address. Choose the best option available.
Sibling Option: If you have a sibling currently enrolled at your preferred school, select the sibling option.
Work Address: If your work address falls within the school’s area, use this option to apply to your desired school.
30km Radius: If none of the above options secure the school you want, select the 30km radius option and choose your preferred school. Do this as soon as possible to ensure you're high on the WA4 waiting list.
Remember, all WA1, WA2, and WA3 applicants will be placed above WA4 on the waiting list, so it’s important to apply strategically.
You may apply to a maximum of 5 schools, and you must submit your documents to all the schools you apply to within 7 days. Additionally, you can upload your documents to the system for one school, allowing the other schools to view them.
